I’ll try to keep this short but if you watched the Rio 2016 track cycling you’ll be aware that Team GB nearly cleared up with 12 medals (6 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze). Five more gold medals than the USA, six more than Russia, seven more medals than second placed Netherlands and ten more than fourth placed Germany.
We seem to excel at sitting down sports (rowing, sailing, canoeing and equestrian).
Every member of Britain’s 14-strong Olympic track cycling team won at least one medal in Rio.
And the reason for the success of British cycling over the past 20 years… Manchester’s indoor Olympic quality velodrome and lottery/UK Sports funding together with extremely hard work for the athletes and dedication from the coaches and back room staff.
Looking at the medal table today Team GB track cyclists would rank 13th in the overall medal standings, one place above Spain. It was exciting to follow and leaves a really good feel factor.
