Issy & Poppy Investigate: Fergal Sharkey and the Sewage Symphony - UK Water Privatisation

Scene: Late Afternoon in Monte Lope Álvarez

Here we go..

Issy stirs gazpacho with a magnifying glass. Poppy interrogates a chorizo. Jasper hums into a jug.

🐾 Me:
Why are we talking about British water companies in Andalucía?

🐶 Issy:
Because the Thames smells like a bin bag full of broken promises. And someone’s getting paid £2.3 million a year to stir it.

🐕 Poppy:
Also, I once dropped a sausage roll in a stream near Slough. It vanished downstream like a dividend — never to be seen again. I suspect shareholder interference.

💦 The Great Water Sell-Off: What Was Promised?

🐾 Me:
Why was the water industry privatised in the first place?

🐶 Issy:
In 1989, Thatcher promised efficiency, investment, and cleaner rivers. No more leaky pipes. No more bureaucratic sludge. Just sparkling innovation.

🐾 Me:
And what did the public get?

🐕 Poppy:
Debt. Sewage. CEOs who treat rivers like personal urinals.

🐾 Me:
Wasn’t it supposed to be regulated?

🐶 Issy:
Ofwat was created to keep them honest. Instead, it became a spectator sport — watching bonuses rise while trout suffocate.

💰 CEO Bonuses and Boardroom Bloat

🐾 Me:
Who’s cashing in?

🐶 Issy:
Chris Weston, Thames Water CEO. £2.3 million package. £195,000 bonus after three months. Meanwhile, Thames dumped sewage for 2.4 million hours last year.

🐕 Poppy:
Susan Davy, CEO of Pennon Group (South West Water). £1.1 million. Her company spilled sewage 350 times a day.

🐶 Issy:
Welsh Water misled regulators and racked up £40 million in fines. CEO Peter Perry earned £456,000 — roughly the cost of apologising for each of the 118,276 pollution incidents.

🐾 Me:
Is anyone held accountable?

🐕 Poppy:
Only the rivers. They’re held hostage by dividends and denial.

🧻 Infrastructure? What Infrastructure?

🐾 Me:
What happened to investment?

🐶 Issy:
They borrowed billions, paid out dividends, and left the pipes to rot. Thames Water alone has £16 billion in debt.

🐕 Poppy:
They spent more on PR than on leak repairs. One campaign rebranded sewage as “nutrient-rich outflow.” Issy bit the leaflet.

🐶 Issy (wagging her tail seriously):
If we rewrote the rules, we’d start by putting the rivers first: public or hybrid ownership, strong regulation, transparent infrastructure investment, fair tariffs. Treat water like a public good, not a spreadsheet for bonuses.

🐕 Poppy:
Rebuild the pipes. Reward engineers, not executives. Stop treating rivers as dividend farms. Imagine Thames with Spanish-style accountability.

🎸 Enter Fergal Sharkey: Champion of Clean Rivers

🐾 Me:
I didn’t expect Fergal Sharkey in Monte Lope Álvarez.

🎸 Fergal Sharkey (emerging from rosemary steam):
I’ve seen more sewage than sense. Rivers are dying. Regulators are asleep. And I haven’t stopped singing since 1985.

🐶 Issy:
We offered him spring water. He sniffed it and said, Too clean. I’m not used to this.

🐕 Poppy:
He’s pacing the patio muttering about phosphates and shareholder dividends. I think he’s composing a concept album called The Ballad of the Blocked Drain.

🎸 Fergal (gesturing dramatically):
Enough is enough. CEOs must be accountable. Rivers must sparkle. And yes — invest in the pipes, not the penthouses.

👻 Jasper: He tried to bathe in my gravy. I respect that.

🐾 Me:
So, what’s the Spanish comparison?

🎸 Fergal:
Efficient. Transparent. Slightly lemony. If only the Thames had half the accountability of Marta’s bar. And fewer bonus-led baths in Perrier.

🐾 Cosmic Greyhounds’ Prescription

🐶 Issy:
End the bonuses. Rebuild the pipes. Treat rivers like living assets. Introduce smart leak detection, recycled water, and climate-resilient reservoirs.

🐕 Poppy:
Boards must include local voices — residents, scientists, environmental watchdogs. Profit can exist, but never at the expense of water itself.

🎸 Fergal Sharkey: 🎶
And sing while you do it. Every pipe, every stream, deserves a chorus of clean water.

👻 Jasper:
I bathe only in truth, and occasionally in gravy.

🎸Fergal Sharkey: (reeling)
BREAKING, right on cue as Issy & Poppy Investigate… The regulator caves in, the companies cash in, and the public pays the price.

🧼 Disclaimer: No Rivers Were Harmed

This dispatch is surreal investigation, cosmic greyhound commentary, and forensic absurdity. Characters — including trout, dividend-chasing sausage rolls, and gravy-bathing rabbits — are fictional. Fergal Sharkey is real, vocal, and deeply disappointed in British rivers. His Andalucian visit is entirely fictional although he's welcome anytime.

  1. I listened to Fergal on the radio recently, he speaks so much sense. The Govt should create a role for him.
