Welcome back to the Issy & Poppy pet loss kids story about friendship, and carrying on. This adventure is a little quieter than most — but sometimes the most important cases happen in the stillness.
Packing Up and Heading Out
After Poppy crossed the rainbow bridge, Dad decided that he and Issy needed a change of scene. The campervan was packed up — biscuits, books, an outside mat, and one greyhound detective — and they headed out into the wide open spaces of Córdoba province, towards their secret park-up on the edge of a nature reserve.
It was a place they all knew well. Right on the Vía Verde, good for walking in any weather, with a splendid view across the still waters of Laguna del Salobral. Poppy had always loved it here. That was reason enough to come.

Issy rode in the front, occupying the co-pilot seat with the quiet authority of a detective who had recently been promoted.
"Now that it's just the two of us," she said, watching the olive groves blur past the window, "and I am heading up the Issy & Poppy Greyhound Detective Agency — does that mean I get the bottom bunk?"
Dad kept his eyes on the road. "No."
Issy turned to look at him. "But—"
"Remember Valdepeñas?"
Issy was quiet for a moment. "No."
"Yes you do," said Dad. "We parked up opposite the open-air padel courts so I could watch the match. But when I took you both out for a walk, the shouting and the groaning and the noisy campers next door — it was all too much for Poppy. She climbed back into the van, jumped straight up onto the bottom bunk, and tucked herself in behind the bathroom wall. Her safe space."
Issy's ears gave a small flick. "Oh. Yes. I remember now."
"And at bedtime," Dad continued, with the tone of someone recounting a great injustice, "I got in beside her — which lasted approximately forty-five seconds — and then had to climb up to the top bunk." He paused. "I am not as flexible as I used to be."
Issy considered this carefully. "It was very funny to watch."
"I'm sure it was."
"That was three years ago," Issy added helpfully.
"Yes," said Dad. "Thank you, Issy."
It was shaping up to be the most heartfelt pet loss kids story either of them had ever lived.
Morning at the Secret Spot
The next morning, Dad was in his foldable chair outside the campervan, mug of tea in hand, Digestive biscuits open, his book How To Be Right resting on his knee. The morning sun was warm and gentle, falling across the still lagoon in the distance. Issy was sphinx-like on her outside mat — alert, watchful, her long nose pointing towards the water.
It was the kind of morning Poppy had loved.
Dad wasn't reading. He was listening.
Pops Returns — A Pet Loss Kids Story
"Pops — it's you!"
Issy's voice was barely a whisper, but Dad heard it clearly. He looked up from his unread page, and felt the familiar sting behind his eyes.
"Dad said you'd come back in your own time," Issy continued softly. "I didn't expect it to be this soon."
The ghost of Poppy — calm, dignified, and exactly herself — settled beside her junior detective on the mat.
"I know, pequeñita," said Poppy. "I just wanted to see you. I knew you'd be here at our secret spot. I always loved this place." She paused. "Do you remember when you nearly fell into the lagoon?"
Issy let out a small huff. "I was investigating a suspicious duck."
"Of course you were."
"I love you, Pops."
"I love you too, Is." Poppy's voice was warm and sure. "And I want you to know how proud I am. You have stepped up. You are leading the best greyhound detective agency in all of Andalucía — and you are doing it beautifully."
Issy was quiet for a moment. "Are Glen and Russ with you? And Toffee?"
"All of us," said Poppy. "Together. Plenty of friends, good walks, and more sniffaris than you can imagine."
"So you're happy?"
"I am safe," said Poppy simply. "And I am at peace." She rose — slowly, gracefully, as she had always done everything. "I will come back when you have completed your first investigation. I want a full report."
"Pops—"
"I love you, Issy."
And then she was gone.
Dad set his book down. He didn't try to hide the tear that had found its way down his cheek.
"She's gone now, Is," he said quietly.
Issy lowered her long head onto the mat. She let out a slow, wistful sigh and stared out across the shimmering water of Laguna del Salobral, thinking about ghost sniffaris and first investigations and promises worth keeping.
"I will, Dad," she said at last. "I promise. I owe it to Poppy."
Dad reached for a Digestive biscuit. "Good," he said. "She'd expect nothing less."
He opened his book.
The morning stayed warm and still.

I am so pleased to see that you are going to continue with the greyhound detective series. It will be good for you and a wonderful tribute to Poppy. My grandchildren will continue to follow, and best of luck Issy!
Hey there,
I’m so sorry about Poppy. My little boy Archie and I have been following your Greyhound Detectives adventures, and we’ve loved every single one. You haven’t posted in a while — almost four months — so I’m guessing the stories might have come to an end. If they have, I completely understand, but I wanted you to know how much joy they brought us. Archie adored the adventures, and I loved reading them too, even when I had to figure out some of your English (and sometimes Spanish!) quirks.
R.I.P. Poppy. Sending our very best to you and Issy.
— Archie’s mom
Thank you so much for this — it means more than you probably realise. Archie sounds like exactly the kind of reader those stories were written for.
You've guessed right that the Greyhound Detectives have gone quiet for now. Losing Poppy in March made it hard to write those particular stories for a while, and I haven't picked them back up yet. I won't say never — but for the moment they're on pause rather than officially finished.
It's genuinely lovely to know Archie enjoyed them, quirks of English and Spanish included. Issy sends her best too (in greyhound, which mostly means sleeping in a sunbeam and looking faintly offended when disturbed).
Thank you both for following along.
— Phil
Read your dog and vanlife blog too, how lovely, rip Poppy Tinribs.
