Ecofiltro 5L – My Off-Grid Water Filter Setup in Rural Extremadura
Having already shared my Ecofiltro 5L review based on home use in Andalucía, I’ve now had the chance to test it in a completely different setting — my quiet plot of land in the Cáceres province, beneath the Sierra de Gata mountains.
The friendly and helpful team at Ecofiltro Europe were clear: this is an off-grid water filter primarily designed to improve mains tap water. But, being the curious type, I took it with me on the road. Thanks to its original cardboard box, it stayed protected in my van. That said, the ceramic element isn’t built for constant movement — it could easily crack if knocked about. So while I wouldn’t recommend it for full-time vanlife, it’s perfect when I’m stationary for a few days, as I often am.
Why I Use It Off-Grid
A clean, shallow stream runs across my finca, fed by the surrounding mountains. It’s a beautiful natural resource — but like any untreated water, it carries risks. I needed a natural water purification system for safe drinking water, both for me and my two dogs, without resorting to plastic bottles from town.
My Simple Two-Stage System
- Collection
I fill a clean container with stream water, then pour it through a muslin cloth into the Ecofiltro 5L. The ceramic core uses natural clay, activated charcoal, and colloidal silver to filter out:
Sediment and fine particles
Microplastics and parasites
Harmful bacteria (e.g. E. coli, Giardia)
Chlorine, pesticides, and some heavy metals
- UV Sterilisation
After filtering, I syphon off 1.5 litres into jugs and sterilise the water using my UV SteriPen. It targets:
Viruses (e.g. Norovirus, Hepatitis A)
Any remaining bacteria or protozoa
- Chill and Store
The water goes into a 1.5L bottle and into the fridge. My dogs and I prefer it cold — especially in the heat.
Plastic-Free, Low-Tech, and Reliable
What I love most about this off-grid water filter is its simplicity. The Ecofiltro 5L is plastic-free, beautifully low-tech, and made from natural materials. No electricity. No frequent filter changes. No fiddly pumps. It just quietly works.
Final Reflections
Although not marketed for travel, the Ecofiltro 5L is an excellent fit for a fixed-base, off-grid setup. It’s not fast or portable — but it delivers peace of mind. Being able to safely use water from my own land, without chemicals or plastic waste, is deeply satisfying.
I continue to be impressed by both the product and the team behind it. For anyone who values natural water purification, sustainable living, and practical, low-impact solutions, the Ecofiltro 5L is a quiet gem worth having in your off-grid kit.
Back at Casa Adora: The off-grid test convinced me this filter works brilliantly with stream water, but how has it performed in everyday home use? After 6 months of daily refills, minimal maintenance, and zero plastic waste, I share my complete experience and final verdict. Read my 6-month long-term Ecofiltro review.
