Mid-November in Casa Adora’s courtyard in Monte Lope Alvarez, Andalucia. The sun is shining, the air is warm, and the tiles glow golden under the morning light.
Issy: Do you remember that time when you thought you’d broken your leg?
Poppy: I did break it.
Issy: No, you didn’t. You lifted your leg up to Dad, he rubbed it, and it was milagrosamente (miraculously) cured.
Poppy: It felt like I broke it.
Issy: Pfff…
Dad arrives with a mug of tea and digestive biscuits, plus his book How to Be Right — will he ever finish it?
It’s a typical day at Casa Adora until José Fontanero arrives to fix a leaky tap.
José (mysteriously): ¿Habéis oído las noticias…? (Have you heard the news…?)
The Case Begins
Issy’s ears prick up. Poppy tilts her head, her greyhound detective instincts kicking in. Something about José’s tone suggests this is no ordinary plumbing visit.
Issy (whispering): Poppy, this smells like a case.
Poppy (nodding): A proper misterio (mystery). Greyhound Detectives, ¡en servicio!
They slip into investigative mode—noses twitching, tails stiff with anticipation. Dad, oblivious, dunks a biscuit into his tea and mutters about chapter three.
Clues in the Courtyard
José sets down his caja de herramientas (toolbox), but instead of heading straight to the tap, he lowers his voice.
José: There’s been a strange visitor in Monte Lope Alvarez. Someone seen creeping around at night, leaving muddy huellas (pawprints) by the fountains.
Issy and Poppy exchange a look. Pawprints? That’s their speciality.
Issy: Could be a rival greyhound. Or worse… un gato (a cat).
Poppy: Or a zorro (fox) on the run.

At the plaza, a notice flaps in the breeze:

A water tanker has been parked by the fuente (fountain), and already a long cola (queue) snakes around. The villagers murmur, each with their own teoría (theory).
Issy and Poppy exchange a glance. This is no ordinary leak.
Suspects and Red Herrings
- 🥋 Antonio Kung Fu insists he could fix the pipes with a single patada (kick).
- 🔧 Antonio Tuerca mutters about tornillos sueltos (loose nuts and bolts).
- ⚡ Antonio Chispa claims it’s an electrical fallo (fault).
- 🎅 Paco Papá Noel strokes his barba (beard), saying the leak is “as big as Navidad (Christmas).”
- 👔 Paco el Jefe shouts órdenes (orders), though nadie (nobody) listens.
- 🍲 Paco Tripillas tells a long story about a stew pot that once flooded his cocina (kitchen).
Meanwhile:
- 🌳 José Sombre casts a sombra (shadow) so long it hides the pawprints.
- 🎨 José Loco paints swirls on the camión cisterna (water tanker) to “brighten the mood.”
- 🔑 José Grande jingles llaves (keys), claiming he can unlock the misterio (mystery).
And in the background, 🫒 Amador from the molino de aceite (olive mill) looks worried.
Reinforcements Arrive
Suddenly, a friendly ghost drifts into the plaza. It’s Spiny Norman, the hedgehog who muddles his words.
Spiny Norman: Importanter! Importanter!
Behind him bounces Jasper, the bonkers conejo (rabbit), ears flapping like helicopter blades.
And swooping down from the tejados (rooftops) comes Pecky, the street paloma (pigeon), cooing proudly.
Issy and Poppy wag their tails. Their detective team is complete.
Time, of course, to open a packet of Digestives — because no proper investigation can begin without biscuits.
The Greyhound Method
Issy lowers her nose to the adoquines (cobblestones). Damp patches lead away from the fountain, winding through the plaza towards the olive mill.
Issy: Poppy, follow the trail.
Poppy: Right behind you.
They weave past Piqui from the panadería (bakery), who offers them migas (crumbs) for energy, and Esperanza, who winks knowingly, hinting she’s overheard something at Alicia’s bar.

But whose pawprints?
Issy sniffs carefully. Not a greyhound. Not a cat. Not a fox.
Poppy (wide-eyed): ¡Jabalíes! Wild boar.
The villagers had blamed plumbers, mechanics, even the notice board. But the culprits were the wild boar from the colinas (hills), rooting around and bursting the pipe.
Resolution
Issy and Poppy race back to the plaza, their ghostly and animal friends in tow. Dad is still on chapter three, dunking biscuits.
They bark loudly, drawing José Fontanero, Paco from Aquilia (the water company), and the villagers to the mill. The evidence is clear: muddy pawprints, broken pipe, and the unmistakable marks of colmillos (tusks).
The villagers cheer. The tanker will stay until repairs are made, but at least the misterio is solved.
Dad (finally looking up): What’s all the fuss?
Issy and Poppy collapse in the courtyard, tails wagging. Another case cracked.
