Issy & Poppy Investigate: Rebekah Brooks, Rupert Murdoch & the BillionāPound Phone Hacking Scandal
Introduction: Glen, Cosmic Dogs, and Media Power
Glen was not my childhood sheepdog cross, but Mrs Lindsayās - my Scottish grannyās neighbour. Glen was the first dog I ever loved. This is dedicated to him.
Here we go..
Rebekah Brooks Phone Hacking Scandal
š¾ Me: Team, today we sniff out Rebekah Brooks - former editor of News of the World, Murdochās favourite, CEO of News International. Phone hacking, billionāpound settlements, and media power plays await.
Phone Hacking and News of the World Trial
š¶ Issy: (levitating above the table, nibbling a floating custard cream) Phone hacking? Journalists broke into voicemails - even Milly Dowlerās. Thatās not reporting, thatās burglary with a byline. Dogs would never eavesdrop on grieving families.
š Poppy: (adjusting her monocle with a rich tea biscuit) The News of the World trial lasted 138 days - one of the most expensive in UK history. Brooks had the priciest legal kennel at her paws: Jonathan Laidlaw QC and silkāclad poodles billing Ā£30,000 a week, all bankrolled by Rupert Murdoch.
BillionāPound Settlements and Legal Costs
š¾ Me: The total bill? Nearly Ā£100 million.
š¶ Issy: (levitating higher, tail wagging furiously) Thatās more than the annual budget of Britainās dog shelters. Murdoch could have rehomed every stray, built fountains of custard creams and wagon wheels, AND still had change for a lifetime supply of bourbon biscuits. Instead, he spent it scrubbing Brooksās paws clean.
Brooks Acquitted, Murdoch Untouchable
š Poppy: Brooks? Acquitted of every charge. Legally spotless. Plus a Ā£16 million golden goodbye. Fail upwards, chew the furniture, and still get a golden chew toy.
Somewhere in the background, Joey the budgie squawked, āGinger Nuts! Ginger Nuts!ā
š¾ Me: And Murdoch?
š¶ Issy: (spinning midāair like a levitating custard cream) He glides above it all, one billionāpound settlement spent on phoneāhacking fallāout - hush money, legal fees, and PR cleanāups - while the rest of us chew dry rich teas.
Media Circus and Accountability
š Poppy: (monocle flashing like a lighthouse) The media circus continues. Reporters reported, but accountability evaporated. Brooks back at News UK, Murdoch smiling, the empire intact. Fences cleared, morals optional.
Glenās Ghostly Verdict
š» Glen: (vaulting spectral fences with ease): Brooks cleared every fence, airborne, untouchable, landing in Rupertās lap. Billionāpound cleanāup? Iāve seen biscuits less protected. Fenceājumping justice for the rich, rules for the rest.
š¶ Issy: (hovering in zero gravity, tail wagging) And yet, the spectacle fascinates. Billionāpound messes, levitating biscuits, ghost dogs flying through the air - itās a circus we canāt look away from.
š Poppy: Verdict from this court: not guilty legally, but guilty morally. Guilty of exploiting power, fencing off accountability, and making a mockery of justice while chewing rich teas.
š» Glen: And guilty of reminding us that the rich leap fences we can only sniff from afar.
Epilogue: Satire, Not Journalism
š¾ Me: Case closed. Pass the custard creams before Murdoch buys them all.
š» Glen: Cricket! I loved chasing balls over fences - ghost style, naturally. Obviously you hit a boundary.
And before anyone at News UK starts sending letters: this is not journalism. Itās satire. But some might say thatās what Brooks and Murdoch were selling all along - scandal dressed as news, profit wrapped in pastry.
The difference is, ours comes with levitating biscuits, monocles, and a ghost dog called Glen.
More from the cosmic greyhound detectives here.

Murdoch. Everything that's wrong with the world. Too powerful even for Govts to stand up to him.
The guillotine would be too good for his ilk.
If you have money then you don't go to jail. Simple.
