Issy & Poppy Investigate: The Case of the Brexit Biscuit Backfire

Brexit impact on M&S -
Not Just Any Brexit Disaster…

In a biscuit-strewn briefing room. Issy’s ears twitch at the mention of customs. Poppy pores over a map of closed M&S stores. Master Whisker-Wan levitates a ginger nut with Jedi gravitas. And the gang look at the Brexit impact on M&S. Not Just Any Brexit Disaster…

Me:
So M&S didn’t officially campaign for Brexit, but their CEO was optimistic — and now they’ve shut their Paris stores because they couldn’t deliver prawn sandwiches? That’s not just ironic — it’s a full Percy Pig implosion.

Issy (tail flicking, Andalusian accent audible):
¡Exactamente! They didn’t shout “Leave!” from the rooftops, but they did hum along. Steve Rowe, their former CEO, spoke of post-Brexit opportunity — and now they’re neck-deep in refrigerated regret and £47 million in Brexit-related costs.

Poppy (sniffing a custard cream):
Eleven Paris stores shuttered. The Scotch eggs sobbed. The trifles turned. All because chilled British goods couldn’t cross the Channel without a customs séance.

Master Whisker-Wan (hovering above a ginger nut):
The Force is tangled in red tape. I sense a disturbance in the supply chain.

Me:
Didn’t they say Brexit would unleash retail opportunity?

Issy:
It did — for cardboard manufacturers. Those 650 pages per lorry don’t print themselves. Meanwhile, the sandwiches perish faster than a custard cream in a toddler’s fist.

Poppy:
And Northern Ireland? Six out of nineteen lorries stopped daily. It’s not a border — it’s a bureaucratic Bermuda Triangle.

Master Whisker-Wan:
This was not just any Brexit disaster. This… was an M&S Brexit disaster.

Me:
So what’s our next move?

Issy:
We’re assembling a task force: one refrigerated van, one Jedi hamster, and a box of diplomatic digestives. Operation Biscuit Bridge begins at dawn.

Poppy:
And if we find any more corporate U-turns, we’ll laminate them. In triplicate. With ginger nut crumbs for authenticity.

Master Whisker-Wan (dramatic pause):
The Empire of Empty Shelves must fall. May the snacks be with you.

Disclaimer:
This dispatch contains traces of irony, nuts (ginger and otherwise), and mild Jedi interference. Any resemblance to actual corporate hypocrisy is entirely intentional. No hamsters were harmed in the making of this satire, though one did levitate a custard cream. Side effects may include spontaneous biscuit dunking, bureaucratic rage, and an urge to laminate your shopping list. Proceed with caution — and snacks.

Footnote:
Steve Rowe, former CEO of Marks & Spencer, expressed optimism about post-Brexit opportunities. In 2016, he noted weakened consumer confidence ahead of the referendum but maintained M&S would adapt. By 2021, the company faced up to £47 million in Brexit-related costs, including the closure of 11 Paris stores due to “lengthy and complex export processes.” Source: The Guardian
