Quail Four Ways: A Tasty Campervan Cooking Adventure
It was a hot summer in Extremadura — too hot even for me — so Issy, Poppy and I escaped north to Cantabria. We parked up at the área de autocaravanas in Ontañeda, provided by the town hall: fenced, electric, water, waste disposal, and a municipal swimming pool with a hot shower for €2.50. On the Vía Verde too. We stayed several times while exploring Cantabria and I can thoroughly recommend it. The local panadería was an easy walk — wood-fired oven, proper bread, irresistible aroma. I bought two baguettes and came back to cook quail four ways.
Update, July 2026: These days, when Extremadura turns properly hot, the Shark FlexBreeze HydroGo misting fan is the first thing I reach for.
Using Dried Herbs for Flavourful Campervan Quail Recipes
Dried herbs such as thyme, herbes de Provence, and oregano work beautifully in campervan cooking. They are easy to store and bring intense flavour to your quail dishes. For example, dried thyme pairs perfectly with garlic and lemon, while oregano complements smoky paprika-seasoned legs. Add the herbs early to allow their flavours to infuse during cooking, creating rich, aromatic meals without fuss.
Quail Four Ways: A Tasty Campervan Cooking Adventure
Cooking quail four ways lets you explore different textures and tastes using just one frying pan with a lid. Start with smoky paprika and cumin legs for a robust flavour, followed by sticky honey-soy glazed legs for a sweet and savoury punch. Then cook garlic, lemon and herb breasts, finishing with butter-free, olive oil-braised breasts simmered in stock or lager. Each method highlights the versatility of quail and dried herbs in campervan cooking.
Enjoying Fresh Bread from a Traditional Panadería
The bread from the Ontañeda panadería was extraordinary — baked in a wood-fired oven, still warm, with a crust that shattered when you broke it. Perfect for mopping up the rich sauces from the quail. Simple pleasures on the road.
