Sometimes, a great adventure begins not with danger or intrigue, but with a craving. A craving for something brown, sticky, and unapologetically British: Nearly Branston Pickle. Welcome to Casa Adora, where the sun is warm, geckoes laze on the walls, and the Spanish greyhounds’ funny adventures are… gloriously overdramatic.
Issy and Poppy, two cheeky Spanish greyhounds, were stretched out on the sun-warmed patio, front paws crossed, sphinx-like, protecting nothing in particular. Their eyes followed tiny flurries of dust dancing in the sunlight, occasionally flicking toward the counter where a suspicious jar sat cooling.
Poppy tilted her head. “So this is the brown stuff Dad spreads on his extra mature British cheese sandwich?”
Issy raised one elegant eyebrow. “For the record, it’s extra mature cheddar.”
“Yes, yes,” said Poppy, “but the brown stuff?”
Before Issy could reply, Jasper the bonkers rabbit bounded into the courtyard, shouting, “HP SAUCE! HP SAUCE!” like a creature possessed by vinegar and panic.
From his perch on the wall, Master Whisker-Wan cleared his throat with all the dignity of a scholar. “HP Sauce,” he said, “was named after the Houses of Parliament, but these days it’s made in the Netherlands since the mighty Heinz took over.”
Chelsea the tabby yawned luxuriously from her sunny patch. Gary the albino gerbil’s tiny nose twitched in awe, as if Whisker-Wan had just unveiled the secrets of the universe. Russ and Glen, the sheepdogs, muttered in perfect unison, “Cheese is best on its own — no tangy brown nonsense.”
Issy blinked slowly. “If you must know,” she said, “the label on the jar says Nearly Branston Pickle a Homemade Nearly Branston Pickle recipe style — in Dad’s best handwriting.”
Poppy’s ears twitched. “He made it himself, didn’t he? Because you can’t buy it in rural Spain?”
Issy nodded gravely.
At that moment Jasper launched himself into the air, screaming, “NEARLY BRANSTON PICKLE! NEARLY BRANSTON PICKLE!” before vanishing behind the lemon tree. Tintin, the new recruit, padded into the courtyard, glanced around, and concluded — with calm certainty — that at Casa Adora, this was perfectly normal.
The Investigation: Cooking the Nearly Branston Pickle
It all began with that craving. Nearly Branston Pickle. Or rather, Nearly Branston Pickle, because Monte Lope Álvarez is no Midlands town, and swede is the stuff of myth.
The chopping commenced under Issy’s watchful eye. She sat in the doorway, nose twitching at the scent of malt vinegar and moral compromise. Poppy, meanwhile, had a more… chaotic approach: absconding with a cauliflower floret and burying it ceremoniously beneath the lemon tree — a tribute to the gods of chaos, perhaps.
Inside, the kitchen looked like a battlefield: sticky spoons strewn about, diced turnip escaping containment, and the dates sulking while the apple staged a quiet rebellion. The tomato purée, as if sensing its moment of glory, resisted vinegar with dignity. Slowly, though, the mixture thickened into something resembling purpose.

They’ll need a few weeks to mature. The cheese will wait. The bread will be patient. And the Spanish greyhounds, having contributed their usual brand of helpful sabotage, are now asleep in a sunbeam, dreaming of sandwiches they’ll never be allowed to eat — though biscuits, as always, remain under careful surveillance. Digestives, Hobnobs, rich tea… the gang’s eternal vigilance continues in this pet-friendly Spanish kitchen story.
And so ends another Issy & Poppy kids’ adventure: where geckos linger, sandwiches are sacred, and a jar of Nearly Branston Pickle is both triumph and mild chaos. Meanwhile, the British cheese sandwich waits patiently in the kitchen, and the gang’s biscuit watch continues.
Issy yawned, stretched, and nudged Poppy. "Well", she said, “I think it’s time to open a packet of Digestives.”
