Back in England’s green and pleasant land I’m in Lancashire’s former mill town Ramsbottom and it isn’t raining. I love this place and imagine that if I ever left Andalucía then this would be my home. I am visiting my son and his wife and their new-born, George, who was born in February.
Catering for George, we visited Whitaker Park which houses a museum and art gallery. George wasn’t impressed with the cultural side of our visit but he did enjoy sitting outside the cafe whilst we enjoyed a pint in 17°C sunshine. For my part I want to record how expensive alcohol is in this country.
Ramsbottom has also embraced Incredible Edible, a food growing movement, which encourages people to grow their own food and eat local produce. Vegetable and herb plots have sprung up all over the place including Whitaker Park where we helped ourselves to wild garlic (pesto coming up later).
Meanwhile, we sat outside the Eagle + Child in their Incredible Edible Beer Garden drinking more expensive pints.
This hostelry was formerly a rundown Thwaites pub which has been recently transformed by Glen Duckett into a gastro pub plus a fabulous beer garden with views across Ramsbottom to Peel Tower.
Wild Garlic Pesto à la Incredible Edible
1 large bunch wild garlic
1 small bunch parsley
50g pine nuts, toasted
50g parmesan cheese
150ml extra virgin olive oil
Big squeeze of lemon juice
Black pepper (plenty of salt in the parmesan)
Place all the ingredients into a whizzer and blitz for a minute or two then slowly pour in the olive oil until blended.
