Issy & Poppy Investigate: The Arrival of Master Whisker-Wan
Introducing Master Whisker-Wan
When my kids were growing up, Star Wars was a regular fixture on our telly, courtesy of a VHS video machine. The theme even spilled over into jigsaws and Lego sets. We had a pet hamster named Master Whisker-Wan — well, technically he was just called Whiskers, but without a touch of poetic licence, that name wouldn’t quite cut it. This dispatch chronicles his ghostly arrival into the Issy & Poppy Investigate universe.
Here we go..
The Biscuit Tin Awakens
Night had draped itself over the olive groves, and the world was hushed. A crumb of custard cream balanced precariously on Poppy’s paw as she adjusted her monocle to peer into the shadows. Issy hovered a few inches above the dusty floorboards, her ears flicking as she kept the biscuit supply under surveillance.
The silence cracked with a faint whoosh. Not wind. Not owl wings. Something… other.
A glow appeared on the rafters. Small, round, whiskered. A hamster — but not of this world. His whiskers shimmered silver, his paws folded neatly behind his back as though he were the guardian of some great cosmic secret.
“Seekers,” the apparition said, his voice soft but certain. “One floats, one peers — both are bound to the pawprint path.”
Poppy gasped, her custard cream tumbling to the floor.
“Issy! He’s… glowing!”
Issy’s tail swished.
“And interrupting biscuit time.”
Dialogue with the Divine Rodent
The hamster inclined his head, entirely serious.
“I am Master Whisker-Wan, servant of the Force of Fur. I come to guide you.”
Poppy’s eyes sparkled behind her monocle.
“A ghostly Jedi hamster? Issy, this is marvellous!”
Issy groaned.
“Brilliant. A rodent who thinks he’s Yoda.”
She levitated higher, circling him slowly, testing the air.
“So, what’s your trick? Riddles? Prophecies? Biscuit-stealing?”
Whisker-Wan’s whiskers twitched with dignity.
“Not stealing, child. Sharing. The Force of Fur scratches where it itches — and it itches most sweetly when biscuits are near.”
Poppy clapped her paws together.
“He understands! At last, a master with taste.”
Issy rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide the faint wag in her tail. The ghost hamster might be eccentric, might talk nonsense, but there was something steady and kind about the way he hovered there in the moonlight.
Jedi Wisdom and Ginger Snap Farewell
As the last crumbs of the custard cream vanished, Master Whisker-Wan spoke again, his voice carrying the weight of secrets.
“Your next mystery will not be solved by chasing. Seek the shadow that follows, not the one that flees. Remember: trust the nibble, not the bite.”
With that, he shimmered once, twice, and vanished into the night — leaving behind only a faint sparkle of whiskers and the scent of ginger snaps.
Issy lowered herself back to the ground with a huff.
“Well, Pops. Either we’ve lost the plot, or we’ve just recruited a ghost hamster Jedi to the team.”
Poppy adjusted her monocle, her tail giving the tiniest hopeful wag.
“Both, Issy. Definitely both.”
Real Dogs, Real Sofas, Real Satire
Issy and Poppy are cosmic greyhound detectives. They are real — even though they’re currently asleep on their sofas, dreaming about biscuits, while I satirically write this.
Ghosts of pets from days bygone are real too — even Jasper, the bonkers rabbit. He still nudges the narrative from the ether.
When the seed rolls, so too does destiny.
May the Force of Fur be with you.
